Despite the origins of the Castañada aren’t very clear, the experts are divided in two differentiated theories. The first one associates the party with banquets from the XVIII, where the guests were only offered plates of legumes, dry fruits and buns; in the moment of the roast of the chestnuts, they prayed in three parts the rosary in honor to the deceased.
In contrast, the other theory sets the origin of the Castañada in the work of the bell ringers in the All Saint’s Night and they fed on chestnuts, sweet potatoes and panellets to keep the vigor and energy.
Chestnuts, sweet potatoes and fire
However, it was, the truth is that de roast of the chestnuts and sweet potatoes are the central act of the party, with the fire is protagonist “scaring away” the spirits of the night. Both products, from that season in which we are, they are consumed accompanied with almonds and pinions from the panellets, mushrooms, butternut squash or drinks like the muscatel and sweet sider.
Every year, the night starts with a bonfire prepared for the occasion, in which the ember is prepared with chestnuts and the sweet potatoes which will we enjoyed later by everyone. Of course, everything with a glass of a sweet moscatel so typical of the Castañada party.
Both products are a great way to recharge energy given to their high content of carbon hydrates. The chestnuts, however, are different from most of the dry fruits in a much lower in their caloric input because of its lower content in fats (2.7%). Besides, they also give us fiber, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.
The sweet potato, is a tubercle similar to the potatoes but with a more characteristic orange color, it has a high caloric content -because of the sugar- but it barely has fats, and it also have a great amount of potassium and fiber. Also, the beta-carotene in the sweet potato (and all the orange fruits and vegetables) contain antioxidants that are very good for your health.
Every party has a symbol, and the Castañada couldn’t had any other than the figure of the Castañera: a woman dressed humbly and standing in front of a fire, roasting the chestnuts which she sells to the people on the street.
